SAP HANA Vora is a new in-memory query engine which leverages and extends the Apache Spark execution framework to provide enriched interactive analytics on Hadoop. As companies take part in their digital transformation journey, they face complex hurdles in dealing with distributed Big Data everywhere, compounded by the lack of business process awareness across enterprise apps, analytics, Big Data and IoT sources.

SAP HANA Vora bridges gaps in the digital transformation journey. The first release covers (1) in-memory processing, (2) hierarchies as specific OLAP query, and (3) connectivity to enterprise systems such as SAP HANA. It was released end of September 2015.
The features of SAP HANA Vora cover typical scenarios: Enterprises are gathering a tremendous amounts of data, e.g., IoT data received from sensors or transactions stored over a long period of time. Since data sizes exceed regular storage devices and database systems, data is commonly stored in Hadoop. SAP HANA Vora runs on Hadoop to help extracting knowledge and making decisions based on such data. The in-memory processing capabilities of HANA Vora allows fast distributed processing. Hierarchies are a common structure of enterprise data, e.g., bill of materials, and Vora supports such OLAP queries. Sensor and transaction data is often only meaningful if enriched with information from enterprises systems that can be gathered via the connectivity features to SAP HANA. Vora enters the Hadoop eco-system to enable enterprises to incorporate big data lakes with existing ERP systems.
In this talk, I will cover the SAP Hadoop Journey, the vision of SAP HANA Vora, and how we technically achieve our goals. The talk is structured as follows:
